In recent years, the rampant capture and sale of fireflies have directly led to a drastic decline in their population in the area, severely impacting local biodiversity.

In response, my colleagues and I have been consistently monitoring and documenting commercial firefly release events. We have conducted on-site investigations into the capture and purchase of fireflies, exposing the false claims of “firefly farms.” Together with relevant government departments, we have worked to halt commercial firefly exhibitions and joined forces with the media to draw public attention to the firefly issue. We also disseminate scientific knowledge about fireflies, urging the public to boycott firefly exhibitions and avoid contributing to their demise.

Xiaobu Town has become a major hotspot for the capture and sale of fireflies. The ongoing media exposure and the strong opposition and appeals from volunteers have finally caught the attention of the local government.

On June 14, 2016, the local government of Xiaobu Town, in conjunction with the forestry, commerce, and urban management departments, conducted a raid on firefly collection sites, confiscating a large number of tools used for capturing and transporting fireflies. For the firefly collection site registered with the business department—Ningdu County Xiaobu Town Dream Love Firefly Farm, the commerce department has proposed to revoke its business license. The town government also announced that in the coming days, a notice would be issued to completely ban the capture and collection of fireflies. They aim to fully resolve the issue within 3 to 5 days.

With the government’s strong commitment, we hope to see fireflies once again light up the night sky of Xiaobu.
